This year marks the fourth year of coexistence with the new coronavirus infection. In the past four years, this year has been the brightest spring of hope. I hope you all are feeling a breath of fresh air in the gentle spring sunshine.

The first ``Online Lecture'' hosted by our association in 2023 will feature Dr. Hachiro Sugimoto, the developer of ``Aricept,'' a drug that suppresses the progression of dementia symptoms, who appeared on stage in 2020 and has many fans in Vancouver. Thank you for inviting me. This time, I will be giving a lecture on the latest developments in dementia prevention in the coronavirus era, focusing on lifestyle habits and prevention methods that reduce the risk of dementia, especially from the perspective of medicine and food.

Due to the prolonged coronavirus pandemic, the number of elderly people who are at increased risk of dementia is increasing. Join us in Mr. Sugimoto's world of fun and meaningful learning!

PS I have attached a message from Mr. Hachiro Sugimoto below.

 Message from Mr. Hachiro Sugimoto

This time, I would like to talk mainly about the contents of the book ``Soup that makes your brain happy.'' In the world, it has now become a reality that people can live to be 100 years old. There are many people close to me who are over 100 years old. However, while longevity is a blessing, the most important thing is a healthy life expectancy. This is the age at which a child can live a healthy life. The mere statistics on life expectancy include people who are bedridden. Being able to live a healthy life without developing dementia is the ideal life for the elderly.

Dementia is said to be a type of lifestyle-related disease. This means that the causes of dementia are found in our daily lives. In other words, I want people to know that dementia can be largely prevented by changing their daily habits. As one of those tips, we published a book called ``Soup that makes your brain happy.'' This soup contains many foods that are said to be good for dementia. Please have "soup that makes your brain happy" in your daily meals and maintain a healthy body that can withstand dementia.

This lecture will also introduce "recanemab," which was recently approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease, as well as other new drugs currently under development.

Please listen to my lecture and laugh together.

March 2023 Doshisha University Visiting Professor Hachiro Sugimoto
